Good grief. Who`s complaining, the States? Sounds like sour grapes to me....... We all saw the faces of the Amercians at the medal ceremony. Get over it every body. They just won the gold medal!!! I wish I could have been sitting there beside them eh?
The only people who this may bother are the losers who wish they could win something (anything) IOC is investigating--oh really--do they not supply thousands of condoms for the atheletes? what does that suggest? Wish some people lived in the real world and not some world that is perfect as they project to be. Yes the Girls deserve a beer ,champange or whatever ,only a few of them will ever be in this position ever again. And while the IOC is investigating the "winners" drop off truck load of tissues for the losers .Eat your heart out, Canada does celibrate its victories any way we want to and its fine by me.
The IOC will be investigating this matter, what will they investigate (roll the eyes)?
The ladies just won the Gold Medal for Canada. We should all be proud of them not worry what Fox or the British Tabs are saying. Let them have their fun, the reality of the cruel world will set in quickly after the games.
Are we that stodgey as Canadians that we believe this is a black eye to women's hockey. If anything the cool factor just went up. I say the first hockey player to blow the olympic rings in the IOC's face gets another medal.
So ,here's the next example of clouded judgement from a sense of entitlement...Yes ,the ladies did great but that isn't an excuse to break the law..Under-age drinking should have been kept in the locker room, behind closed doors were it could heve been supervised and really, smoking in a public place, gee ,can I light up too...Dumb Behavior tarnishes something special...
It doesn't matter if it's one month or ten till her birthday or that she's legal at home. She's still 18 and the legal age to drink in BC is 19. The law is the law. Great role model for young kids.
maybe but wasn't the discussion at the start about how we as Canadians need to 'not be so nice' ? Home ice, a GOLD medal, the place was pretty much empty except for a few press. It wasn't like the Americans were sitting there watching.
I love the Olympics. 100,000 condoms for mostly married or dating athletes to use on each other for casual sex while they celebrate a gold medal. Smoking and drinking paid for by the taxpayers to celebrate a gold medal. Yes, the Olympics are for our elite!! What goes on at the Olympics stays at the Olympics, apparently. We should all be proud of what the Olympics has become. A taxpayer funded orgy for the gifted athletes of the world. Great.
She turns 19 in 1 month. Big deal. Too bad you are so perfect that the Canada womens team didn't live up to your expectations. It must be nice to so perfect.
Wow, Canadians and beer, heaven's forbid and I'm sure everybody waits until they're 19 to start drinking. Just let the girls have their fun. If it were the men's team doing this I doubt there would be even a mention of it.
Once again "male dominance" has raised its head! Its ok for for one of our male medalists to guzzle beer in public with not one but two RCMP officers by his side!Beer is sold regylarly in the venue they played in, so really what was illegal? Somking was the only law broken. The home province of the young lady accused of drinking underage is probably 18. She can vote and elect our government but she can't celebrate? Give me a break!
Give me a break. This is a typical celebration, watch after Grey Cup , Super Bowl etc . The people who are complaining are the losers. Speaking of losers most of the American girls where very much sore losers getting their silver medals. Only a few smiled and looked like they appreciated it. They should have watched the Finnish girls when they got their medals. Go Canada Go
Read the BBC news today - headline reads: Canada outclass US to take gold in ice hockey.
This is followed by a very positive article. But if you choose only to read the tabloids, try raising your standards.
Good on you girls!!! For all of your hard work that it took you to get to the Olympics, celebrate your golden win!
I thought it was definately a weird thing to do. you cant keep it in the dressing room? Or go to a bar? The late night comedians are going to have a field day with this one.
Remember that winning silver is like being called first loser. Get over it USA. Sounded like they were ambushed by photographers who were not good enough to be on the regular beat. This will blow over, the gold will be remembered for a very long time. GO CANADA!!!!
Nobody had a problem with Jon Montgomery having open liquor (Beer) in public after his win... What's with the double standard? Or is it just because we beat the States?
When they won, maybe they should have all put on long dresses, drank tea from little fancy cups then darned socks, cooked supper for everyone and song Ring around the Rosy, We're #1 and Goldish.
Come on, if there are equal rights then tell these self-righteous ignorant JERKs to go stick their heads up their own butts
Good on the Gold Winning Women's Team. We should be proud of these Ladies
Because they are women? Because some are under age? Because they were in public? Beacuse they beat the U.S.? Four questions with one answer... Big Deal! Who Cares! Every championship football game is broadcast on national television with the players drinking and smoking in the locker room, they know they are on camera. To me it is more disturbing to watch a car race (or any motor sport for that matter)and see the drivers drinking, I am not so naieve as to think that the driver is going to drive the race car home, but it just doesn't seem right to me. The girls, in my oppinion showed more common sense and restraint than most of our revered champions. Just my thoughts for what they are worth.
They want to be treated like adults. They should show the responsibility and act in public like adults. Our ladies hockey team should think long and hard about the Korean skater that interfered with the skater behind him and lost his gold medal. If they lose the medal there is no one to blame but themselves. None of us are above the laws of the land. Shame on our veteran players for not being good examples
First off people, it's not the States complaining, it's the media trying to make a story. These ladies are not robots, they just won a gold medal for c-----sake!!!! If this was the men would we even be hearing anything. Some of the comments on this page are ridiculous. I'm embarrased that Hockey Canada felt the need to appologize. The Ladies team should be proud of what they did and the media should shut the hell up.
Good grief, get off your high horses and quit your bitchin people. It's a non-topic and the media should be kicked in the ass for trying to turn it into something scandalous. Congrats to the ladies and they deserved to enjoy the moment!
Anyone who said they "screwed up", give your heads a shake. They spent 4 years of their lives getting ready for that moment and your going to tell them how they can celebrate?
The best in any sport, music, leadership, etc are expected and responsible to live by a higher standard. This team failed. It has nothing to do with male/female. If any male celebrates this way, they have failed as well. The athletes are the best at their sport but they also represent all Canadians. This should result in them living by a higher standard. Any jerk can smoke or drink alcohol but it takes a mature person to set an example that you would want any child to follow. The majority of the above comments show how much our high standard of moral living has slipped in Canada. We need to reevaluate what is important and then live by that higher standard. I wonder if this is a reflection of and a reason that Canada is not held with as high a regard around the world now.
The difference between any jerk smoking a cigar and having a beer on the ice and those girls is that the jerk in question didn't just win gold, again! The standard they set, again, is winning gold, again! If one of my daughters wanted to have a beer of smoke a cigar after winning a gold medal at the olympics, I would gladly join her, and I don't smoke! It's not as if they're celebrating by getting loaded and turning over cars. You, Mr. "Anonymous", are a hard-assed prude and so is everyone who agrees with you, and you and your kind do NOT represent Canada! It sounds like you need one, but I'd bet you NEVER touch that sweet Saskatchewan champange! Get that post out of your posterier and let the girls celebrate, buzz-killers!
I think they are lucky the celebration took place on canadian soil, as canadians. If the ladies won the same gold medal in another country and celebrated the same way, people in the host nation would not look as kindly on it as we had. Would we let it slide if another country did the same thing on our ice?? I doubt it. Either way, great win ladies!
Why is drinking alcohol and smoking considered a way to celebrate? Why would anyone consider damaging their bodies to celebrate especially athletes? Just dumb.
And so they should. Beer and champagne, the whining about this is beyond ridiculous. Those that are making a big fuss about it should read the "one line" in the Vancouver Sun Feb 18/10, about the US Men's hockey team and the damaged hotel rooms. Sounds like gender bias, as the women's actions are under investigation, but then coming from the IOC, I'm not surprized.
Ladies, an old saying of my father's "work like a man, play and drink like a man". Seems to fit here as hockey WAS a man's game. Be proud of what you have accomplished as the rest of the country is.
Absolutely - the world has been trashing us for just about everything and anything. No longer are we satisfied to just be at the olympics - we're winning - too bad. Now they have to find other ways to trash us and this party is sour grapes. Good for you girls - all of Canada wishes they could have been there with you on that ice.
What was that? What a pathetic embarrassment for all Canadians!! They were leave the stands well before it was over! OMG! Who put that together? IT WAS AWFUL!! We won't have to worry about any more immigrants coming over here after that performance! We look like a bunch of hicks that actually do live in the dumb-a$$ tundra! A pathetic display of oversized Beavers, Moose, RCMP and Hockey Player cut-outs! Elementary Students could have done a better job!
Where was the REAL CANADIAN TALENT? Nickelback was the only one worth watching....were was talent like Rush, Brian Adams, Celine Dion, The Guess Who (or BTO), Nelly Furtado, April Wine, Triumph, The Tragically Hip; OUR LADY PEACE, or the Barenaked Ladies - not even Anne Murray ??!!
All those Canadian Medals are somewhat tarnished after that embarassing closing.

On a lighter note it was good to see that the Canadian tradition of have a beer in the rink after a game is alive and well, even in the big cities.
