Should Our National Anthem Be Changed To Be More Gender Neutral?

Comments

As I

understand it, this would just be changing it back to the orginal way it was written. So when it was frist written it was more 'PC' that the current form.
Small change in the big picture and if it's back to the orignal, go for it.

When the National Anthem was

When the National Anthem was written in 1908, Political Correctness was not a concept taken into account at that time. If the change back to the original has no 'PC' strings attached, then by all means change it back. However if this change is being done at the insistence of some special interest group then forget it and if this is the case then I am with the poster that suggested scrap everything in it so that it is acceptable to all and nothing but a meaningless ditty.

She is just fine the way she

She is just fine the way she is.

PC??????

They don't want it changed to the so called "Original" wording for historical reasons, but for PC reasons. Thats the big difference. For that reason, those wanting to change it can go to H#LL

National Anthem Gender Friendly!!

If those Parliament committee's are going to receive such a huge amount of $$$$ to be a part of this study, scrap the whole idea and give the $$$$ to our OLYMPIANS, would be better spend for sure!!

olympians

I agree as it was our Olympians who bolstered us to share our National Anthem, with the world, every day for two weeks. We were proud of it!

As a female I'm deeply

As a female I'm deeply offended by the "in all thy son's command" line and I demand a change.

As an atheist I'm deeply offended by the line "God keep our land" and I demand a change.

As a pacifist I'm deeply offended by the "stand on guard for thee" line and I demand a change.

As a citizen who wasn't born here I'm deeply offended by the "home and native land" line and I demand a change.

Just 4 little changes, and I'd be perfectly happy.

change anthem--

just because you are offended we should change it to accomadate you--are we that selfish now. I m sure if it was re-written somebody else will be offended too.No matter how many versions you can propose some one will be unhappy ,so suck it up--the world wasnt built just for "you" Just because you have quirky beliefs dosen't mean we all do.

Pretty sure that was what is

Pretty sure that was what is called sarcasm.

Please define this

Please define this "sarcasm". As a concept it is quite alien to me. And I can see that I am not the only one who doesn't understand it.

Er... and leave the anthem alone. I think we as a nation have more important things to worry about - like the budget, the government finally answering questions about the Afghan detainees after trying to skirt the issue in any way they can, and the future of "Own the Podium" for amateur sports funding, to name a few.

quite easily. I laughed too.

quite easily. I laughed too. Obviously you have trouble grasping this type of humor.

Change Anthem

I don't believe she is asking that it be changed "just" for her. She's merely adding her voice as being one who is offended by the rather archaic lyric of the anthem. I am an atheist male who is also offended. Who is quirky? Someone who believes in the "god superstition"...or someone who is able to rationally and logically come to a different conclusion. The words can be changed to make the lyric more universally inclusive...as it should be.

wow

so, as a Christian and native citizen, if I'm offended by *your* changes, where does that leave me? Are your "offences" greater than mine?

Maybe just take out the

Maybe just take out the words altogether? I bet an instrumental anthem wouldn't offend anybody, except maybe the hearing impaired.

IS THIS A JOKE? This has

IS THIS A JOKE? This has been around for a lot longer than most of us, I am a strong and proud Canadian woman and I think it is beautiful and perfect the way it is. I think that it is wrong that people can discredit something that was done along time ago and that most of us are proud of. I am sorry that you are affended by some of this song, but that doesn't give you or anyone else the right to change this. I was born here in Canada and I am proud to be Canadian. If we let people change the anthem, I think that people should be aloud to take out all religion. Canadian pride is like our own religion. You don't need to change this out of ignorance.

Would a disabled person in a

Would a disabled person in a wheelchair find the line "we stand on guard for thee" offensive.

Wow! Are you for real? I'd

Wow! Are you for real? I'd be perfectly happy if I had everything my way too but that would mean all you whiners who have nothing better to do would have to go somewhere far, far away ... wait ... something might offend you there too!! Gettin' pretty tired of all this crap! From a perfectly happy, God-lovin', flag-wavin' female!! Oh - and you need to grow up and realize that demanding things gets ya NOWHERE - I tell my kids that all the time!! HAHAHA

Keep tradition

You've got to be kidding me. If you changed tradition.....you'll have to change every Canadian tradition to keep up with the times to be politically correct and in the end you'll have no tradition left.

As a female I am not offended...its part of our history. Back then that was home the lineage move on.
Due to you being an athiest find a country that matches your beliefs and move there, otherwise I am not changing our tradition in how the anthem was formed in our historical point in time.
As for you being a pacifist..standing on guard does not necessarily mean war. It means standing up for Canadian culture, freedom and beliefs. If you don't like it then don't participate in it.
As a citizen "the home and native land" doesn't have to mean BORN HERE....it means WHEREEVER YOU MAKE YOUR HOME in this country.

Lila

If you are offended because

If you are offended because you are not born here, but your a citizen of this country which you should call it home. has no logic. if you are offended by the national anthem of this country , you should not live in this land. I am a citizen of Canada , born not here, but i am proud to call Canada my home/land. Get real.

If you are not happy with

If you are not happy with this go back to the country you left and try to change there anthem. You will probably be shot or thrown in jail. People are tired of forigners coming here and demanding us to change like the country they left. Go back home.

Anthem

Get serious already!!! Why waste time and money on some little thing like this when there are a lot more serious things Parliament should be dealing with. No one would be happy with any changes anyway and more time and effort will be wasted debating this foolishness.

Well put!

I agree that there are more serious and pressing issues that need the attention and money of the government.

Another example of political

Another example of political correctness gone awry.

I think we have more

I think we have more pressing issues in this country.
This is bad budget deflection

I think it would work well

I think it would work well to change it to "in all of us command."

Anthem...Political correctness gone mad.

I remember when the anthem was first changed to make it easier to sing. Now there are people who wish to change it because of simple words like "God" and "sons" are in the lyrics and find such words offensive. I feel sorry for those poor souls who may feel insecure about their individual beliefs and feel the need to lash out because of their individual insecurities. Maybe these people should look at themselves first before they begin looking at changing something such as our National Anthem to suit their insecurities.

AGREED!

Very well said.

Well first of all i do not

Well first of all i do not believe in God, and yet i say leave the anthem the way it is, but you talk about our individual insecurities, seems to me that you have individual insecurities or you would not be bothered by a change, oh and dont feel sorry for me because i dont need some fake God to run my life, i will do just fine as i have done my whole life, that is since i stopped believing. Also i don not feel insecure about my belief, in fact they are probably stronger than your beliefs which is why you are scared if they change it, my beliefs are strong enough that i am fine if they leave it,, perhaps you need to look at yourself.

Agree! Leave it alone, when

Agree! Leave it alone, when people move to this country they should accept what we have here because that is why they came here in the first place. I won't go to another country and try to change their ways to suit me, they'd probably boot me out of their country!

Sure, we have money to throw away

Sure, let's hold a big review and spend millions to decide!
Wait ... we don't have millions?
... we're in a deficit?
... we can't afford health care and good roads?
Then, by all means, let's spend oodles of money on changing the anthem. I'm sure a lot of sick and dying people would really appreciate that their health care dollars went towards that.

Budget defection

Hey , look over there while I pick your pocket.
Looks like an obvious defection.
Is this what they were planning when parliament took time off.

Having watched a large

Having watched a large amount of the recent Olympics, I don't recall seeing people stop to think about gender and anything else as they sang our anthem anytime or anywhere. People became more proud to sing than ever before. Because of a few; the many have to change. Have any of you ever seen the national anthem being sung during a curling match before. Leave it be and worry about more serious matters.

Are you kidding me!?

The Honourable Robert Stanley Weir must be spinning in his grave at this moment!
Robert Stanley Weir, was a lawyer and at the time Recorder of the City of Montréal. The O Canada we sing today is the version which was published in an official form for the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation in 1927, and has since been generally accepted in English speaking Canada.
"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.
I'm embarrased for the "women's movements" that feel so insecure in their position in life that they feel the need to rewrite a song that had no intentional referance to "putting women in their place" it was simply the way it was, men, women and children, were governed by the "son's" of the time. (which I might add were birthed and raised by WOMEN)

Exactly! What's better than

Exactly! What's better than a hot button topic on your first day back after a 2 month break to get people to forget all about real issues? None of these comments have to do with the budget, the deficit, the Afghan detainees inquiry, or the fact Harper's prorogued parliament two times in two years.

This is a calculated distraction, and looking at the media coverage and the reaction of Canadians its working like a charm.

lyric change

This was originally brought forward by a female LIBERAL MP. It is ridiculous!!!!!

Too much Time

This is what happens when government is prorogued. Politicians have TOO much time on their hands and look for things to do to drain our tax dollars. I dread to think how much a committee to investigate the possibility of change will cost. Anything is too much! It's not broken - so don't fix it!

Anthem

I took a quick poll of the women in my office and they all scoffed at the idea of changing the national anthem. Most felt that the phrase "all thy sons" included them anyway, regardless of the male conotation.
Canada "herself" is usually refered to in the feminine (eg. "Canada is blessed with an abundance of wildlife in "her" forests and oceans"). This isn't sexist. Canada is beautiful and nurturing and so the monicker fits.

as a canadian i am deeply

as a canadian i am deeply offended by deeply offended feminne

Leave it alone

What a waste of time and money. The governement needs to move on to real issues. This topic is a joke and yes I am a female. Leave it the way it is.

As I woman I am embarrassed

As I woman I am embarrassed for our sex! How can you be so pompous and self-righteous as to think the national anthem is offensive to women? There is absolutely nothing wrong with our anthem, and really, if there were so many people offended by it, so many that make it part of a budget agenda, then why oh why did you not put up this stink before the Olympics when EVERY person in the world would be listening to our anthem over and over again as we took the podium for 14 Gold medals????? Oh that's right, because it is a ridiculous request to change something that is a part of Canada's history! I feel a great sense of pride singing our anthem and I hope every other true Canadian does as well. And for those of you who immigrated and feel our anthem doesn't work for you because this is not your native land.....suck it up buttercup... you moved to OUR country, you can sing OUR national anthem and be proud or quit complaining! We have far more important things to address as a country than to worry about changing something that works perfectly fine!

i don't know why some

i don't know why some canadians think we have to change our way to accomodate people moving to our country. we say to ourselves and everyone in the world that this is the best place, yet we let people move here and change our ways to their ways. now, they left their country for our country because the liked our country better than their country and now they miss their country so they try to change our country to their country, why don't they just move back to their country and we will stay in our own country the one that we love the way it was. we are satisfied with our country it is what our annsestors fought for and believed in.

Simple Solutions....

This is not a difficult problem here, let’s solve it and move on. We could alternate. On even years we could sing “All thy sons command” and on odd years “All thy daughters rule”. Or, for those who like to think outside the box, change it from the 2 official languages to Ket (an obscure language from Central Siberia). There are only a few hundred people in the world who speak or understand Ket, so hardly anybody would be offended.

I LOVE CANADA! My

I LOVE CANADA!
My grandfather fought in 2 world wars so we could have the freedom to be Canadian and everything it stands for.
Why do we feel the need to offend the majority to please the minority?

Woperdaughter

You can't use the terms "alderman," "journeyman," "chairman," or "foreman" without getting in trouble with the idiotic PC crowd.

Why is it that you can still use the term "woman?" Shouldn't we be told to use the term "woperson?" But oh, no! That has the "son" in it ... so better go with "woperdaughter!"

Our National Anthem

Changing the word "sons" to another gender neutral word(s) simply seems right to me. It's like the part of the commercial played during the Olympics where the little girl in her home by herself scores a goal and is thrilled to cheer, "She shoots, she scores!" This isn't an extreme feminist view; it's an emotion that can make "us" feel we are equal citizens. This idea is labelled as political correctness, but why should girls and women have to wonder why "daughters" are not mentioned in our National Anthem?

I don't know about you, but

I don't know about you, but all this talk has had this female humming my national anthem all day and the more I hum, the more proud I become. Leave it just the way it is ... does EVERYTHING have to become us against them???

i think its a waste of our

i think its a waste of our time and money,it seems any body that has a whim to be in the publics eye can change a couple of words in a song and say they did that and get their 2 minutes of stardom. we are living in such a phoney time.the wording in our national athem was probably made up when patratism meant something to people. this might sound stupid to some people, jfk "its not what your country can do for you its what u can do for your country" quit trying to tear it apart

National Anthem

Let's see. When I was watching hockey, the FEMALE commentators for women's hockey were talking about the odd MAN advantage, or the 6 MEN on the ice. The bobsleigh event was considered a 2 or 4 MAN event, but called a WOMEN's event as it should. The term is generic, and does not need to be changed.
As far as GOD in the anthem, the vast majority of the population believe in some kind of God. You have Christians, Muslims, Hindu, Jews, etc. There are very few atheists, and to change the wording just for the few is absolutely ridiculous and even irrational.

Our national anthem should

Our national anthem should definitely NOT be changed, if it has been fine all these years why does it have to change now?
Like:
"God keep our land"
Why should this be changed people who do not believe in the lord should just forget about that thats there problem.

"our home and native land"
We have natives in our land so basically this is true. Many people do want their national anthem to be true and this is what this is!

"all thy sons command"
Its really not sexist just like we say Policeman, fireman, Postman etc. they aren't to b changed we do still have policewomen for example, the anthem if fine the way it has been all these years and at the Olympics i think MANY Canadians were very proud of our country during those few weeks.

How do you think these elders feel being about in their 60's and have been living here in this great nation all their life and see no reason to changed the anthem? Well they cant really do anything about it can they?

Personally i DO NOT think it should change after all these great years, Think about it we helped the saves to freedom, and we are one of the most richest country's in the world. the anthem was just fine then why do they choose now?

The only thing that offends

The only thing that offends me more than the possible change is the Group trying to force the sale of the casinos for a "free" stadium.
