I would love to hear what they consist of! I think the idea of a casino is great, it would attract people when a stadium wouldn't, it would make it all-purpose. Kind of like diversifying!
Are you forgetting that there is already a multi-million dollar casino built a few years ago that's just outside the range of a Paul McCallum field goal? Sounds like a moot point anyway. Chief Gamble seems to have been assuming a little too much. Besides the only source for their money would be the Government, and $430 million is going to be tough enough to put together.
Let the First Nations build their hotel/casino/stadium and then put money into fixing Gordie Howe Bowl & Griffiths Stadium for our local kids to play football in.
I don't know what to think, I LOVE the looks and design of the First Nations Stadium, but 55,000 is WAY to large of a stadium (36,000 would be perfect). and selling them the 2 casinos just to have to use that money in the construction of the stadium doesn't sit right with me. really it means they are paying $400 million and getting 2 casinos. we are losing 2 casinos and paying atleast 200 million. I can't wait to see the other proposals as they come forth.
The First Nations proposal is far more attractive and will appeal to a broader customer base. Having a casino/entertainment center along with hotel attached to the stadium is a wise concept. Also, considerable private money, if not entirely private money from various bands would be going into this complex and SIGA would be purchasing Casino Regina. Face it, there will not be federal money coming anytime soon for the other monstrosity of a doomed dome, as the will of the federal government is just not there to fund such a project, nor can the provincial government afford it. With the Seminole band on board with the success they have had with the Hard Rock Cafes, this might be the best if not the only chance Regina has of getting a stadium. If rider nation and other private partners and band fund the rest it would take the tax payer off the hook and be feasible.
Lets face it, some people do not like the idea of First Nations bands owning anything. However, the fact remains that some First Nations bands have a lot of money and are investing in commercial property. This is a wonderful opportunity for First Nations.
My only concern with the FN proposal is the size of the stadium involved. The Riders have identified that they don't need 55,000 permanent seats. If the proposal could be scaled back to include retractable seating or something similar to reduce capacity for football games but retain the higher seating for large events, then I'm completely on board.
I'm torn on this poll. I like the idea of the best run Indian Tribe in the world paying for a large portion of our stadium. What I don't like is a non-government group running something so contentious as a casino. Casinos have a long history of corruption and problems in the private sector (search Las Vegas and Atlantic City histories).
If the Seminole spokesperson was correct when he spoke to the media rep in Tampa this morning and they have no interest in expanding in to Saskatchewan, have the First Nations put the cart before the horse? The Provincial government has copies of multiple pieces of correspondence sent to the First Nations stating the Regina and Moose Jaw Casinos are not for sale and yet their proposal states that all is dependent on their being able to buy the Casinos. I am sorry but this sounds like FNUC all over again.
I would very much like to see a multipurpose facility built in Regina. I do believe that the 33,000 seats are more of a feasible fit with expansion possibilities for larger events and population growth. This would also maintain a respectable seat price for events - especially football. If places like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver can't fill their facilities how could we and be profitable. One of their problems is that no one can afford to rent space in their facilities and their ticket prices are exorbitant.
We hear now that there are several private interests for different projects.
The only caveat that I would like to see is that all vendors are on a level field. This means that all would be required to purchase the land and during construction and post - all taxes would be required to be paid as with any private citizen and business. This means PST, GST, Municipal, Provincial and Federal - no exemptions.
Nothing is owed or given, success is earned.
What the heck, all the money whether it is Federal, Prov, City comes from the same tax payer base. This is NOT the time to add more debt to the tax payer. Good Grief!
I would like to hear and read the details on all the proposals. The 55,000 seat stadium is too large a space for the Roughrider organization to fill on a regular basis. I also would like to see any commercial development and partnerships surrounding the new stadium available to everyone.
Do we really want to sell out the Casinos ? Do we really want to give away our only leverage for a stadium? I will never attend anything there if that is what happens.
Got to love how everyone for the stadium was always talking about thinking big, dreaming big, yet the majority are voting for the smaller project of the two. I'd still go for rebuilding Mosaic and keep the Riders playing outside at the same location they've been playing for the last hundred years, but of the 2 choices and if the Riders must move, the First Nations proposal is by far the best.
I really hope that they can get a final rendition taking the best parts of all the submissions. I really like that it is about 36 thousand seats, too many more and it might look like a morgue inside if not a sellout. I really like the idea of putting something beside it, like a hotel, or a casino, or something (theatre, cultural centre, sporting event, or some other good idea). We really do need to start thinking big here or we will never ever become big on the entertainment scene.
Since I live in Saskatoon I have only ever been in Mosaic stadium twice in the past 50 years. I would fight to make sure that my taxes do not go towards a trophy structure in another city that I would very likely never even enter. I don't care what type of stadium is built as long as I'm not paying, even indirectly, that should be for the people who actually use it to pay.
I think we should all remember the history the first nations have with running a buisiness (the first nations university). The football stadium should be owned by the city or the government only.
I like part of the Native proposal, such as the look and size of the facility as well as making it an entertainment hub. I'm not so sold on selling the casinos and giving control over such a huge venture to a special interest group where it is a native first philosophy. I would prefer publicly operated and in the interest of everyone not just one group.
It doesn't have to have 55000 permanent seating but should at least be able to seat that many if needed in the stands.
I would like to see the bigger stadium built. If it is to be truly a multipurpose facility then more than just the needs of the Rider games needs to be considered. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have the bigger venue for concerts. As far as it being too big for Rider games, wouldn't that present a wonderful opportunity to offer seats to youth groups and school classes at a nominal fee and thereby build the next generation of Rider fans.
55,000 seats (like the First Nations proposal has) is way too big. As such supply would be much higher than demand, ticket price would plummet to compensate, revenues would drop (doing a lot of damage to the riders & making the stadium itself very difficult to pay off). 33,000 seats is far more reasonable in size.
We don't hsve money for healthcare. Why are we talking about a new stadium?
You stadium builders. Think about it. There is only one place the money comes from. Our pockets. However it would get built it would be taxpayer money. Besides Regina shouldn't get a new stadium anyway after covering up the assessment of the existing one.
If we think green and if a new stadium was to be built it should be close to the center of provincial population. That is not Regina. Arn
I think there are way to many unanswered questions with the native proposal.
1) do they plan on making a new stadium/hotel/casino an urban reserve?
2) will the property that the existing casino and will oventually become "high end shops" is on become an urban reserve?
3) will a portion of the casino revenue be going south of the border?
4) We are constantly hearing about many first nations complaining about the housing situation on reserves. Where are they going to get 600 million dollars from?
I am curious as to who paid to have the design for a new facility drawn up by the architec.
I live in a small town in west central Sk. and have gone to many Rider games over the years. We live 2 hous to S'toon and 5 hours to Regina. I know the Saskatchewan Roughriders have been adopted by the city of Regina but with a new stadium deal in proposal and Saskatoon SO much more centrally located and growing at an alarming rate I was thinking that the Regina Roughriders could pack up and move north to a more central location accessable to all of this provinces people ESPECIALLY if the Saskatchewan tax payer is going to foot the bill for this place.
I think the Tribe building a hotel, casino, stadium combo is a great idea. Just so long as the land is NOT made an Urban Reserve. They will make a ton of money from this and don't need anymore special treatment on taxes and laws. My only really complaint/question is - where is the Saskatchewan Tribe getting $600 million from? O right - they would get it from the government which is at the end of the day our tax dollars.....
look at commonwealth for example and how much money the Eskimos make when they do sell out twice a year maybe..... 33000 IS TO SMALL and I WILL BE BEYOND TICKED OFF IF THEY SPEND 300million plus to build a stadium that isnt any larger than the one we have!!!!!! id be fine with the 55000 capacity as long as there is a way to curtain off the upper deck and keep it feeling exclusive during the regular season
